This chapter discusses electromagnetic compatibility testing of electronic components and subsystems that are intended for integration onto aircraft. It describes the central aspects of some of the commonly encountered technical tests performed under aviation electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. Aircraft subsystem EMC exists and is considered in the wider context of aviation systems safety. Systems safety and mission criticality are determined through a risk assessment process. Avionics can be grouped into three categories for the purposes of EMC considerations: safety‐critical items, mission‐critical systems and other systems. Technical standards for electromagnetic compatibility of subsystems and components define test methods and limits for emissions, or emanations, from subsystems in order to provide protection for the classes of systems that are likely to already exist on the host aircraft. Conducted emission tests aim to quantify the magnitude of radio frequency emissions that exist on power and other interface wires or cable bundles connected to ports on the equipment.
