Autonomous vehicles are driverless vehicles that can operate themselves using complicated driverless and self‐sustained systems. They are able to operate by sensing their surrounding and performing calculations without human intervention. With global IoT systems under constant attack, autonomous systems have also seen a drastic rise in security concerns. There can be lots of attack vectors that can be targeted in a fully automated vehicle. Some of the attack surface are Smart keys, Vehicle data servers, Software updates, ECUs, wireless communication systems. All these can be exploited and can potentially lead to further greater losses. Attacks can range from simple denial of access or locking out of systems to vehicle thefts, accidents, and data thefts. With the hackers gaining remote access to an operational vehicle there can be some serious threat to life. This book chapter examines all the details regarding security and cyber threats to autonomous vehicles and their potential impact. Different systematic approaches like system security auditing, gap analysis, security assessment, and data trust centres can help to minimize the attacks and protect autonomous systems. The severity of this situation needs to be tackled immediately and swiftly by car manufacturers.
