This chapter describes satellite technology fundamentals. It briefly outlines the basic principles of orbiting satellites. The chapter discusses the satellite launch and in‐orbit operations. It also describes different subsystems of satellite such as satellite propulsion, thermal control, power supply, attitude and orbit control, telemetry, tracking and command, payload and antenna subsystems. The chapter also discusses multiple access techniques including frequency division multiple access (FDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), code division multiple access (CDMA) and space division multiple access (SDMA) techniques. Newton's laws relevant to satellite motion include Newton's law of gravitation and Newton's second law of motion. Right ascension of the ascending node tells about the orientation of the line of nodes, which is the line joining the ascending and descending nodes, with respect to the direction of vernal equinox. Inclination is the angle that the orbital plane of the satellite makes with the equatorial plane.
