This chapter is devoted to image processing , the task of extracting the optical navigation observables from a picture. It describes various algorithms for inferring the center of images of stars and unresolved bodies, of larger bodies, and of features on bodies, for the choice of centerfinding technique can depend on the size and shape of the body being imaged. Rather, owing to diffraction within the camera optics, a star image is broadened into a point‐spread function , universally abbreviated to “PSF.” A reflectance law, also called a “scattering law” because it describes how sunlight is “scattered” into 2π steradians, describes how incident light is re‐emitted from a surface, as a function of all three angles. The different types of scattering includes Lambert Scattering, Lommel–Seeliger Scattering, Minnaert Scattering, and Hapke Scattering.
