Oil and gas pipelines’ abandonment occurs when the pipeline is no longer operated and its service is permanently ceased. Oil and gas pipelines are typically abandoned because there is no further need for the pipeline or it is being replaced for capacity reasons. Planning for abandonment, procedures for abandoning pipelines and related facilities, and postabandonment physical issues and care are reviewed in this chapter.
