The method comprises the steps that firstly, the hybrid electric vehicle is controlled to enter a pure electric mode according to an accelerator pedal opening signal, then the pure electric equivalent fuel consumption rate is determined according to the historical average fuel consumption rate of an engine, and then the series equivalent fuel consumption rate is determined according to the power generation electric quantity and the required electric quantity of a generator; controlling the hybrid electric vehicle to enter a series connection mode according to the pure electric equivalent fuel consumption rate and the series connection equivalent fuel consumption rate, determining a parallel connection equivalent fuel consumption rate according to the engine direct drive energy and the vehicle driving demand energy, and finally determining the hybrid electric vehicle according to the series connection equivalent fuel consumption rate, the parallel connection equivalent fuel consumption rate, the current vehicle speed and the target vehicle speed. And controlling the hybrid electric vehicle to enter a parallel mode. According to the method provided by the invention, switching among different driving modes of the hybrid electric vehicle can be accurately realized according to the pure electric equivalent fuel consumption rate, the series equivalent fuel consumption rate and the parallel equivalent fuel consumption rate.
