A user interface in a vehicle and a method of operating the same, comprising sampling user data according to a schema wherein tasks are captured including start and end times, associated user interaction with the interface at the start of the task and associated system state measured at the end of the task. The result is that user behaviour is described and captured as a series of tasks performed by a user which includes periods of inactivity as null tasks. This historic record of user behaviour may be used by a machine learning algorithm that may provide user behaviour predictions for input to an adaptive user interface or an intelligent user interface for use in making a vehicle interface which adapts its interaction to the users behaviour.
