Changes continue to take place within UAV operating environments. Advancements in platform design allow longer flights over larger distances, while the lower cost of UAVs and sensor advancements provides more opportunities to capture the environment in greater detail. In response to the continued growth of the UAV market, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has made substantial changes that affect all aspects of the operational environment, namely where, when, and who can operate a UAV in the United States. In addition, new technical requirements slated to go into effect in Spring 2024 will mandate equipping all UAVs with a mechanism for remote identification (RID). Regulatory changes are expected to provide more operational safety for US airspace but could ground the thousands of UAVs not currently equipped with the new technical requirements. In this chapter, we review the current state of UAV operational environments and the regulatory changes impacting where and how UAVs operate in the United States.
