Due to the advantages of quick response, low cost, and flexible deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle swarms have broad application prospects in the military and civilian fields. Compared with single aircraft, the swarms have the advantages of robustness, scalability and information interaction. The safety of unmanned aerial vehicle swarms is crucial to perform the flight mission successfully for the system. When performing tasks, communication and navigation technologies provide basic guarantees for cluster collaboration. This paper introduces the research status and development trend of unmanned aerial vehicle swarm communication and navigation technology. Two typical unmanned aerial vehicle swarm wireless communication architectures are introduced. Most systems still utilizes ground stations to control unmanned aerial vehicle swarms directly, called infrastructure-based swarm architecture. On the contrary, this paper mainly introduces swarm architecture based on Ad-hoc network, and points out its development direction. As satellite navigation signal easily suffer from interference, several new autonomous navigation technologies which do not rely on satellite navigation are introduced, including bionic navigation, visual-inertial integrated navigation, and cooperative navigation.
