This paper examines the co-integration relationship of transportation sector’s energy consumption, civil automobile ownership, and the average passenger and freight haul of China from 1953 to 2013, the results of which indicate that long equilibrium relationships exist between the four variables. Thus, VAR model is established to analyze interaction relationships. Then, the impulse response function is estimated to explore the impact path, on their own and others, of random disturbance of transport energy consumption, civil automobile ownership, and the average passenger and freight haul. The results suggest that energy consumption of transportation industry is mainly affected by its lagged variables and random shocks. The influence from civil automobile ownership and its shocks is relatively high and persistent. The average passenger haul is positive to reduce energy consumption. In contrast, the freight is potentially decreased if its efficiency of energy-use is improved.
