Study carried out to provide information which will lead to better understanding of behavior of simple-span highway bridges under passage of heavy vehicles; bridge is idealized as single beam, simply supported at ends, and vehicle is represented as multiple axle sprung load with linear resistance-deformation relationship; concepts and simple approximate rules are developed for estimating magnitude of maximum dynamic effects; bridge-vehicle systems are studied to assess influence and relative importance of various parameters affecting response of bridges.
