Use of non-symmetric propeller shrouds to develop force perpendicular to propeller axis is explained, and several configurations and applications to steering of ships are discussed; theory is developed for prediction of magnitude and direction of side thrust; in specific application, semicircular shroud replaces conventional rudder; advantages predicted are increase in turning force with elimination of rudder appendage drag and increase in propulsive thrust of about 5%; results of preliminary experimental investigation show that theory gives good approximation to actual results for thrust coefficients up to about 5.
