Syncom III was launched on Aug 19, 1964; all three stages of Thrust-Augmented Delta vehicle performed satisfactorily and subsequent orbital maneuvers placed satellite into nominally synchronous equatorial (stationary) orbit over International Date Line; live TV of Olympic Games from Japan via Syncom III was technical success; satellite also enabled establishment of first 24-hr/day, seven day/wk reliable communications network across Pacific Ocean; attainment of stationary orbit, which permits used of fixed ground antennas without expense of costly tracking systems, and Syncom III's excellent performance indicate operational and economic advantages of synchronous communication satellite.
