Hammer test is not prescribed in any specification to which rails are rolled, but it is done at Tata works to ensure safety of passenger traffic; was instituted because one or two rails were found broken in track and microscope revealed minute flaw at junction of web and foot; description of test; tests and results on rejected rails; conclusions.
