Describes experiments undertaken originally to ascertain the loads old rails could safely carry, but the experiments were extended and the conclusions reached that in iron rails there is a gradual deterioration rendering them unfit for service; and that the effect on steel rails is to decrease their ductility and diminish their power of resisting deformation.
