Paper reviews development of Sikorsky stowed rotor concept for high speed V/STOL aircraft from its conception in 1949 to present; uniqueness of this concept is ability to perform hovering low-speed flight as helicopter, to stop rotor in flight, stow it within airframe, and then to proceed to forward speeds unrestricted by rotor limitations; new design approaches and application studies of stowed rotor against current high speed V/STOL missions are described; results of recent flight simulator studies and wind tunnel tests confirm feasibility of concept.
