Regulations governing overhaul time limits assume that scheduled component overhauls are good preventive maintenance; paper critically assesses current practice and shows that scheduled component overhauls are almost never justified; description of four special maintenance programs in use at United Air Lines covering accessories (Component Reliability Program), electronic (Reliability Controlled Overhaul), hydraulic systems (Test and Replace as Necessary TARAN program), and air conditioning (Component Reliability Engineering Evaluation CREEP program).
