Study of possibility of reducing cost of steam turbine machinery, undertaken by Stal-Laval, resulted in turbine of new and rather radical design, AP series, in which planetary gears were incorporated in first reduction stage; cycles 1 and 2 are of traditional type; in cycle 3 auxiliary machinery is driven directly by main turbine; cycles 4 to 6 include h-p preheaters, gas/air heaters, and in cases 5 and 6, reheat; aspects of propeller efficiencies, coupling arrangements. etc, are discussed in connection with increasing size of ships.
