Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) undertook study of southwestern coastal belt from Trivandrum to Alleppy for suitable rocket launching site close to geomagnetic equator; final choice fell on Thumba, small sparsely populated village 4 mi north of Trivandrum; location offers unique facilities for research on ionosphere and meteorological problems peculiar to region; description of site development, rocket facilities, and payloads and equipment; Space Science and Technology Center, its functions and results achieved.
