To examine operational reliability of post-war-built main propulsion heavy diesel engine crankshafts in ships classed with Lloyd's Register, Society's records of reported defects for 10-yr period, 1953 to 1962 inclusive, were scrutinized and analyzed for engines of more than 1000 bhp; analysis covers incidence of cracked, broken or "slipped" shafts classified in relation to ranges of horsepower, types of crankshaft construction, position of machinery in ship and location of fracture.
