To meet demands in earthmoving field for greater speed, higher payloads, and bigger machines in off-highway trucks, LeTourneau-Westinghouse Co introduced variable rate "Hydrair" suspension; device is similar to double-acting hydraulic cylinder, except that no fluid is exchanged in cylinder, and displacement of piston causes pressure change in trapped gas on either side of piston head; general construction and application; comparison of "Hydrair" characteristics with conventional heavy duty leaf springs when operating at different speeds with varying payloads.
