Railroad transportation at Carol Lake, Labrador, project was selected as being lowest cost system for moving 17 million tons of concentrates; four diesel-electric, 1750-locomotives, each handling 15 side dump ore cars of 100-ton capacity, are used to haul minimum of 55,000 tpd of crude ore over 5 1/2 mi track between mine and beneficiation plant; trains are arranged so that locomotive pulls loaded cars to dumper and pushes empties back to mine; maximum grade of main line is 0.25% in favor of loads; maximum grade against loaded trains is 0.1%.
