Status and developments of outward compressing free piston gasifiers are discussed, with reference to gas generators in relation to turbocharged and compound engines, present status of machine produced by Free Piston Development Co, and operating characteristics of proposed 150 shaft hp gasifier-turbine-gearbox combination for vehicle traction; under certain conditions, gas generator cycle operates with superior efficiency, and with improvements in component efficiencies, gasifier will achieve gas thermal efficiency of order of 45%; vehicle power unit having estimated specific weight of 8 lb/shp and volume of 9.75 shp/cu ft for complete unit, with overall torque ratio of 10 to 1, can be realized.
