Integral construction and naturally cooled transformers used in British Railways design for a-c multiple-unit trains are features of AM10 cars constructed at Derby Carriage and Wagon Works; each four-car set consists of second-class driving trailer carrying batteries, second-class motor coach with guard compartment, second-class trailer and composite driving trailer; transformer is naturally air-cooled with forced oil circulation through windings and radiator tubes mounted on two sides of tank; it is of semicore or shell type having shaped core with round pancake coils and sandwich windings; diodes are electrically insulated from cooling fins by beryllium oxide cups.
