Three field tests involving 40 cars were conducted at Wood River, III, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; vehicles were operated on severe, stop-and-go driving cycle consisting of 4 mi of urban driving with speed limit of 35 mph, followed by downtime of 4 hr with cars parked out-doors (Aunt Minnie operation); appreciable engine rusting was observed; other influences were fuel scavenger and operational variables such as ambient temperature, engine temperature, and crankcase ventilation; range of motor oil antirust performance found appears to be inadequately predicted by existing laboratory engine rust tests.
