Review of background to current jet lift tactical transport proposals and design possibilities for VTOL performance which range from low disk loading of helicopter through deflected slip stream tilt wing and tilt duct designs to fan lift and high velocity compact pure jet lift; effect of speed on cost effectiveness is considered as well as influence of operational environment on aircraft design; design features of DH. 129 project and Dornier DO. 31; aerodynamic research and problem areas, such as ground erosion, noise and structural problems, and control methods; future development.
