Integrated system for mechanized handling of railway cars in Scottish coal mine embraces automatic marshalling of empty cars to required loading points and ejection of loaded cars into marshalling sidings; it handles up to 40 cars/hr; movement of cars at coal mine is mainly by gravity on inclines; for operations on level use is made of remote-controlled, powerful propulsion unit which travels on narrow gage track positioned within normal railway tracks; it can exert propulsion force of 5 tons and can move rake of 500 tons dw on level.
