New concept in railcar propulsion and self-propelled gas turbine railcar is described; railcar, built by Budd Co, is propelled by two small gas turbine engines and has completed 9 mo of testing simulating high speed, stop-and-go commuter service; major accomplishment of program has been to demonstrate compatibility of small gas turbine with heavy-duty railcar environment; selection and application of gas turbine engine and associated power transmission system and some test results are reported.
