Plasma radiation shield is active device using free electrons, electric and magnetic fields for purpose of shielding astronauts from energetic solar flare-produced protons; concept is reviewed in light of current studies and found physically sound, but important practical problems have to be solved -- establishment and control of extremely high voltages required, and integration of concept into realistic space vehicle design; other aspects include selection of shielding voltage, vehicle configuration possibilities, superconducting coil system, and vehicle power supply; effects of plasma radiation shield on communications, attitude control, propulsion, and life-support systems of space vehicle are also considered.
