Development of transponder at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, used with Millstone Hill radar to provide real-time tracking of small targets at very long ranges; block diagram of final transponder, built by Douglas Aircraft Co; IF amplifier is built up of modules of existing design using silicon tetrode transistors; transmitter system consists of crystal oscillator operating in 110 mc region, buffer, two doublers, and final amplifier; use of transponder extends slant range of Millstone Hill radar more than 10,000 n mi.
