Abstract Trip distribution matrices can be used to study functional relationships between origin-destination zones and modes of travel. The tables are first standardized so that comparisons can be made across zones and modes of differing overall size. Graph-theoretic clustering procedures can then be applied to the standardized tables to produce groups with strongly interacting units. This two-stage methodology (standardization and clustering) is illustrated through the analysis of a 1970 2-way journey-to-work table for Los Angeles, and a 1970 3-way mode-specific table for New York City.
