Abstract The present invention relates broadly to a method of powering trains and trams in Australia with locally produced renewable ammonia. Wherein the method of powering trains and trams using renewable energy, such as solar, wind, tidal or geothermal energy to power water electrolysis for hydrogen and to power air separation units for nitrogen and to power the balance of plant to synthesise these two gases into ammonia; and storing such renewable ammonia in liquid form in on-board storage tanks located on a train; and deploying on such train modified or specially built gen-sets to generate electricity for the train's propulsion motors where instead of the gen-sets being fuelled by diesel they are fuelled by renewable ammonia from the on-board storage tanks so as to power the train's propulsion via carbon free fuel.
