The invention provides for controlling railway rolling stock (20) in three possible modes, namely: an automatic-operation mode in which the rolling stock is controlled automatically by an integral automation system; a manual operation mode in which the rolling stock is operated by an on-board driver via an emergency control desk (22) incorporated into the rolling stock and comprising controls (24, 25); and a simplified control-takeover mode in which the rolling stock is controlled by an individual on board using dedicated controls (24) which, at least functionally, correspond to just some of the emergency control-desk controls whereas the remainder of the emergency control-desk controls are physically inaccessible to this on-board individual, these dedicated controls including at least a switch (24.1) for switching to simplified control-takeover mode, a forwards-drive button (24.2) and an emergency-braking button (24.3).
