A brake cylinder (201) configured to provide a brake signal to an automotive simulator, the brake cylinder (201) comprising a damper housing (227), an elastic damper (229) disposed within the damper housing (227), and a piston (223) configured to move a mass in an axial direction towards the elastic damper (229) at least partially into the damper housing (227). The block includes a mechanical stop (245) configured to limit axial movement of the piston (223) in the axial direction. The brake cylinder (201) also has a sensor (204) configured to measure a response to movement of the piston (223) and to send a signal indicative of the movement to a processor. The brake cylinder (201) is configured to be connected to the brake pedal (101). The mechanical stop (245) divides the braking process into two stages, a first stage in which the pedal can be depressed and a second stage in which the pedal cannot be further depressed due to the mechanical stop (245). In one variation, the brake cylinder is a purely mechanical system with only a damper housing or in combination with a single cylinder chamber. Alternatively, the described cylinder chamber is a slave chamber for a hydraulic brake cylinder, which further comprises a master chamber fluidly connected to the slave chamber via a passage.
