A method of detecting malicious wireless V2X communications includes retrieving perception data from a perception system on an own vehicle; determining information of nearby objects according to the sensing data; receiving a first basic security message (BSM) from the first V2X source; and determining whether the vehicle position indicated in the first BSM corresponds to a position visible to the own vehicle. Where the vehicle location indicated in the first BSM does not correspond to the location visible to the perceived own vehicle, the method further includes receiving a second V2X communication from a second V2X source and determining whether the second V2X communication indicates that a vehicle is at the vehicle location indicated in the first BSM. If the second V2X communication does not indicate that the vehicle is at the vehicle position indicated in the first BSM, the first BSM data is marked as malicious.
