The invention relates to a method of controlling a steer-by-wire system (1) of a road vehicle. Wherein the steer-by-wire system (1) comprises a feedback actuator (8) for applying a feedback torque to the steering wheel (3) and a road wheel actuator (5) for rotating the steerable wheels (4), each having two redundant power packs, and the method comprises the following steps: a) if a fault (11) in the road wheel actuator is detected, the steering wheel (3) is driven by the steering wheel (3); if so, increasing the feedback torque provided by the feedback actuator (8) to a value (10) higher than the calculated feedback torque; b) if a fault (9) is detected in one of the power packs of the feedback actuator (8), increasing the feedback torque provided by the normally operating power pack of the feedback actuator to a value (10) higher than the calculated feedback torque.
