A controller and method for estimating a range indicator of a vehicle. The range indicator 112 is estimated based on a parameter comprising a level 116 of an energy source in the vehicle, characterized in that the controller 110 is configured to estimate the range indicator 112 based on at least one additional parameter selected from the group comprising an actual consumption 118 of the energy source in the vehicle and an operating time 114 of the prime mover. According to the invention, the energy source is at least one of fuel in a fuel tank and charge in a battery for an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle and an electric vehicle, respectively. According to the method, the accuracy of instantaneous/average mileage calculation and DTE 126 estimation considering vehicle static and engine operation conditions is improved. Whether the vehicle is stationary or moving, the driver/user of the vehicle knows the accurate time to fuel or charge the battery.
