Methods and systems for accurately determining a location of a vehicle traveling along a road are described. The method includes first locating an approximate position of the vehicle using techniques such as GNSS or dead reckoning from known positions, and then refining the position of the vehicle with terrain-based localization. This type of localization includes using temporal and spatial variations in the magnitude of the correlation between a current road surface longitudinal section obtained while traveling along the road and a reference longitudinal section of the same road previously obtained.
