The invention relates to a method for inerting a fuel delivery system (200) in a marine vessel, the fuel delivery system having an internal fuel space, in which method an inert gas is admitted into the internal fuel space of the fuel delivery system (200) at a first location (L1) of the fuel delivery system (200), the fuel is replaced by an inert gas and is led out of the internal fuel space of the fuel delivery system (200) at a second position (L2.1, L2.2) of the fuel delivery system (200), the fuel being replaced or diluted by the inert gas. The fuel is introduced as an inlet flow from the second position (L2.1, L2.1) to the buffer vessel (232, 234) from which the fuel or a mixture of fuel and inert gas is removed as an outlet flow to the fuel processing vessel (10) such that the outlet flow is asynchronous with the inlet flow and the fuel is oxidized in the processing vessel (11).
