A battery system includes: a housing configured to receive a battery cell, wherein the battery cell is configured to output thermal energy as a byproduct of electrical energy generation and/or consumption; a housing wall positioned proximate to the battery cell; and a plurality of fins extending from the housing wall, where the plurality of fins are configured to absorb thermal energy from the battery cells and dissipate thermal energy to air or a heat sink or both air and a heat sink, and where a certain fin of the plurality of fins includes a channel, the channel is configured to facilitate flow of air between the aforementioned one of the plurality of fins and an adjacent one of the plurality of fins.
