The invention relates to a method for predicting the movement of a road user (V1 to Vm) in the surroundings of a vehicle, the surroundings of the road user (V1 to Vm) being shown in the form of a raster map (RK) having a predefined number of raster units, the raster map (RK) being supplied as input information to an artificial neural network (2), and predicting trajectories (T1 to Tn) of the traffic participants (V1 to Vm) from the input information by means of the neural network (2). According to the invention, in order to scale the display area (DB) of the raster map (RK), the scale of the raster unit is dynamically scaled as a function of the speed of the road users (V1 to Vm), the raster map (RK) being used to display an area of the surroundings of the road users (V1 to Vm), which area is larger when the road users move at a high speed than when the road users (V1 to Vm) move at a low speed. The invention also relates to the use of a movement of a traffic participant (V1 to Vm) in the surroundings of a vehicle for operating an automated vehicle function, said movement being predicted by such a method.
