The method involves forcibly charging an energy storage (11), and operating a heat engine when a vehicle is at non null speed and a charge state of the storage is less than a threshold. The forcible charging of the storage is stopped, and the heat engine is stopped when the charge state of the storage is greater than the threshold, where the threshold is fixed to a minimal energy value that permits starting of the vehicle. An independent claim is also included for an energy storage control device for a hybrid vehicle.
