The invention proposes a method for determining the torque setpoint (Csp) for a motor vehicle engine. According to the prior art, the setpoint is determined according to the engine speed (N) and to the extent (B1) to which the accelerator pedal is depressed, in order to obtain a given acceleration (aref), referred to as reference acceleration, which is obtained only if the vehicle has a predetermined reference mass (mref) and is running along a road with zero gradient (a). The invention avoids the driver having to depress the accelerator pedal further, when the mass of the vehicle is higher and/or when the vehicle is moving on an an upward slope, in order to increase the torque and thus obtain the same acceleration. In order to do that, the torque setpoint is determined as being equal to the sum of a first torque value (Cmot) corresponding to the same depression of the pedal and, on the other hand, a differential torque value (TQdiff) that has to be applied to the vehicle in order for the acceleration of the vehicle to remain identical to what it is at its reference mass and on the flat.
