An inter-span switching mechanism (61) is positioned in an inter-span transfer zone (60) which extends between the spans (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D) in the transverse direction (Y), the inter-span switching mechanism (61) being arranged such that the first carriage (11) can be operated either in a working configuration, in which the first carriage (11) can be moved in the longitudinal direction (X) in a defined span, or in a switching configuration, in which the first carriage (11) can be translated in the transverse direction (Y) from said defined span to a destination span.
