An ambulatory robot system 10 comprises two robot units 11, 12 each provided with attaching means 14 for selectably attaching and detaching the respective unit 11, 12 from a surface (15a, 15b fig. 4A), a coupling linkage 13 composed of articulated limbs 16, 17 coupling the units 11, 12 together to be relatively movable for varying their positional relationship and drive means 19 for displacing the coupling linkage 13 to produce the relative movement when one unit 11, 12 is detached from the surface (15a, 15b fig. 4A) and the other unit remains attached to the surface (15a, 15b fig. 4A), the detached unit 11, 12 being rotatable relative to the attached unit 11, 12. The units 11, 12 may comprises two relatively rotatable parts 11a, 11b and 12a, 12b. One end of the coupling linkage 13 may be provided with a functional component 20, the end being capable of being uncoupled from one of the units 11, 12. The attaching means 14 may be a plug or socket, magnetic fixing means or suction fixing means. The units 11, 12 may include traction means 21 move over a surface.
