An apparatus and method for determining if a vehicle 1 is within a quadrilateral shaped detection zone 20 includes an image processor 1002 and a camera 1001 to capture one or more 2D images of a scene 1200, where the scene includes a portion of a surface 10 that includes the detection zone, wherein the detection zone consists of two pairs of lines, each pair of lines consisting of non-neighbouring edges of the quadrilateral. The images include a first image in which the vehicle is visible. A memory storage device 1003 stores the locations of first and second vanishing points of a quadrilateral portion of the captured images that corresponds to the location of the detection zone. The location of a first corner of a basal plane of the vehicle is determined, and an algorithm ran by the image processor determines if the vehicle is within the detection zone by combining the location of the first corner with the location of at least one of the two vanishing points.
