PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a heavy load tire excellent in low heat generation properties when being into a tire and excellent in the flowing properties of the rubber upon vulcanization, and a pneumatic tire produced using the rubber composition.SOLUTION: Provided is a rubber composition for a heavy load tire including diene rubber and carbon black, in which the diene rubber includes natural rubber and a modified polymer obtainable by modifying a conjugated diene polymer with a nitrone compound, the content of the natural rubber in the diene rubber is 60 mass% or higher, the content of the modified polymer in the diene rubber is 40 mass% or lower, and the content of the carbon black is 30 to 70 pts.mass to 100 pts.mass of the diene rubber.
