To provide a method of installing a strain measuring device that is very simple and can be used particularly well in harsh environments, and a method of using a strain measuring device that can reliably determine whether the strain sensor element has fallen off and that the strain state of the strain sensor element can be easily set.SOLUTION: The strain measuring device includes an optical fiber 6 provided with a strain sensor element 5, a support 2 to which the strain sensor element 5 is fixed, and a structure 4 to be monitored to which the support 2 is fixed. At least a part of the support 2 is held in a state of being elastically deformed by the structure 4 when the support 2 is fixed to the structure 4. When the strain measuring device 1 is attached, after elastically tensioning the support 2 at least partially using bracing member 41;81 and then adhering the support 2 to the structure 4 to be monitored while holding it, the bracing member 41;81 is removed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1a
