To provide a method and a device which can avoid a transverse error in operating a vehicle along a target trajectory.SOLUTION: The method includes setting a target steering angle for operation along a target trajectory (S), where it is checked whether a zero-point shift exists between the target trajectory (S) and a current position and posture of the vehicle; and, if the determined zero-point shift exceeds a predefined threshold, adjusting the set target steering angle on the basis of a correction constant, thereby partially or fully autonomously operating the motor vehicle.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3a
