The present invention relates to a smart cruise control apparatus and a control method thereof, wherein the smart cruise control apparatus comprises: a detection module detecting an object around a subject vehicle; a rear speed calculation unit calculating a distance and a relative speed with a rear vehicle when the rear vehicle is detected in the rear of the subject vehicle by the detection module; a rear collision expectation unit expecting possibility of a collision between the rear vehicle and the subject vehicle by using the distance and the relative speed with the rear vehicle, calculated in the rear speed calculation unit; and a control module accelerating and decelerating a speed of the subject vehicle or controlling a braking force of the subject vehicle when determining there is the possibility of a collision between the rear vehicle and the subject vehicle by the rear collision expectation unit.
